The idea of our three ponds is based on a Chinese Myth of the Dragon's Gate. The Dragon's Gate is located at the top of a waterfall cascading from a legendary mountain. Many carp swim upstream against the strong current, but few are capable enough or brave enough for the final leap over the waterfall. If a carp successfully makes the jump it is transformed into a powerful dragon. The image of a carp leaping over the Dragon's Gate is an enduring cultural image of courage, perseverance and accomplishment. It certainly took courage and perseverance to build this pond!

This project took about 4 months to complete, working mostly on weekends. I had one morning of help from two burly guys on the initial excavation. Then, Dennis and I dug the rest. We started the stonework by establishing where we wanted the spills to be and setting those rocks in place. Once we liked the 'idea' of it, we laid in the liner and started setting stones. Every stone was moved about 3 or 4 times while we put the jigsaw puzzle together. Dennis brought the stones to the pond, and I built the walls. The very large stones Den moved with a Dingo. We really thought through the placement of these big stones and they were only moved once. He did great and only one stone almost fell into the pit ... but we caught it in time!

Dennis calculated the water volume and figured out the plumbing. He specified the pump size to move the water from the lowest pond up to the top spill and installed the works.

Amanda Lavallee is responsible for this beautiful beast of a garden feature. We were standing about where the ponds are now and I said, "I would love to have a water feature, but I don't know where to put it". She said, "How about right here!". That was either late 2013 or very early 2014.
