This Fothergilla reliably has the best fall color of every one that I've tried. It has nice spring bloom and a not-too-aggressive spreading habit. Only about 3.5' tall, it need only minor pruning to stay attractive.

Planted 9 of these along the East Walk in front of the Abelia grandiflora. I wanted something low maintenance to 'fill space' in this border and I wanted a fat matte leaf to contrast with the small shiny leaves of the Abelia.
